Cultivating Chinese music students’ cultural identity through teaching and learning piano in a university setting in Guangdong, China

Research description:
Cultivating students’ cultural identity has become one of the most critical tasks in the Chinese educational system. However, how to develop students’ cultural identity through piano courses was seldom concerned with teachers’ and students’ understanding of the links between Chinese culture and piano interpretations. This study aims to explore the idea of bringing Chinese culture with piano practice and characterizes the learning process of finding Chinese cultural heritage within music through individuals’ perspectives.
BIO:
Ms. Wei is currently an EdD student in CCA Department at HKEDU. She got her first M.A. degree from the China Conservatory of Music in piano performance and teaching and her second MSc in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Portsmouth. Ms. Wei is also a senior lecturer at the College of Art, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. She received the second She won many awards for piano performance and excellent teaching. Ms. Wei’s research interests are mainly in piano teaching and music education.
